What do you do to look after your mental health?

As a mum of two small children, it can be tempting to try and be all things to everyone whilst holding down a full time job. Life can be very busy and a work life balance is so important, I carve out time to do things that bring me joy and practice self-care such as spending time with my husband and kids, reading, walking and visiting family and friends.

Lauren Houston, Action Mental Health Works Coordinator

With a background in psychology and postgraduate qualifications in psychotherapy, Lauren’s professional pursuits have largely centred on reducing stigma and promoting early intervention for those struggling with mental ill health. Lauren has gained a breadth of clinical experience within the mental health sector including complex mental health, eating disorders, addiction, workplace wellbeing and therapeutic intervention. This combination of clinical, charitable and academic experience has proved invaluable to Lauren’s role as an Action Mental Health Works trainer, enabling her to integrate lived and learned experiences into each training session and answer client questions with empathy and understanding.

Exercise is a big part of my self-care, but that looks different every day depending on what my body and mind need! I love CrossFit classes- it’s an hour for me to just focus on having fun and being in class with others. But other days, an hour seems too much and I’ll go for a 10 minute sea swim or take my dog for a dander round the local park.

Susan Godfrey, Project Administrator

Susan has a degree in drama and whilst she hasn’t been on the stage in a few years, her degree definitely set her up with excellent people skills and the ability approach things with confidence. She has since gained 20+ years in customer service and administration, having worked in Insurance, with city council, in housing, with the health trust, in education and in banking. Her wealth of experience has more than prepared her to support our Works programme and engage with our diverse client group.Susan joined Action Mental Health in 2022 as the Project Administrator for both Action Mental Health Works and our Menssana team, who deliver to schools, youth & community groups.

What do you do to look after your mental health?

I write silly lists and make up jokes/sketches with my fiancée (we might be the only ones to find them funny but it makes us laugh). I make up songs about my cats, I pet dogs at every opportunity, and I spend time with my niece and nephew. I love making my friends laugh, having a do-nothing day without any guilt, making my list of 3 gratefuls each week and trying new things – like joining a choir, improv classes or Zumba.

What you're committing to

As a member of the Workplace Wellbeing Hub, your organisation is committing to our three pillars. These represent our values, and they are the foundations of a mentally healthy workplace.

Promoting Early Intervention:
Prioritise preventative measures which mitigate against work-related mental ill-health. Such measures may include preventative training workshops, accessible signposting or assigned wellbeing personnel.

Embrace Inclusivity: Create an inclusive workplace that tackles the stigma surrounding mental-ill health. For instance, by creating clear processes for staff to request reasonable adjustments that support their mental health.

Cultivate a healthy culture: Take measures to protect against an unhealthy work-environment. For instance, by managing workflow or embracing flexibility within the workplace.

Very pleased with this this training and would definitely recommend it to all people managers"

Liberty IT, Engineering Manager, Mindful Manager

"Working in a fast-paced environment means I often struggle to find the time for self-care. The training reminded me to put as much focus on mental health as I do on physical health! I’ve learned quick and easy techniques which I can use throughout my work day to prevent stress and overwhelm from building up”

Belfast International Airport, Mental Health Awareness

“Mindful Manager training should be compulsory for all managers and team leaders! I previously felt uncertain addressing mental health within my team. After the session I feel confident in spotting early warning signs and intervening early to provide support”
